Valuations for the Purpose of Sale

All sellers need to assess the value of their business when putting it on the market. Whether an asking price is set by the buyer, or the company is brought to market without an asking price, the seller needs to know what to reasonably expect from the transaction.

The value assessment can be done informally, through discussions with a business broker or other knowledgeable person, or it can be done formally by a credentialed business appraiser.

If a formal appraisal report is prepared by a C.B.A. (Certified Business Appraiser) or other credentialed appraiser, it may become part of the information package used to market the business.

Whether or not released to potential buyers, a formal appraisal is recommended for businesses with any significant value.
